Shell recognizes the strategic role of chemometrics, statistics and data science in supporting its operations and functions of its customers. We provide statistical consulting support and training for scientists and engineers in Upstream/Downstream R&D, manufacturing, and corporate functions. We also provide an R&D environment to explore new and innovative concepts in the fields of chemometrics, statistics and data science.

We are looking for people who have the ability to perform high-quality chemometric and statistical analyses in order to develop data-driven solutions to our customers’ business and technical challenges, as well as the ability to clearly and effectively present findings to the customer.

Dimensions

  • You are an experienced chemometrician/statistician, in terms of both technical and consulting capabilities
  • You are capable of taking a governing role on a consultancy project or PoC and assists others in the technical aspects of project
  • You will contribute to the improvement of existing chemometric/statistical design/processes
  • You will maintain high standards of code quality, making use of version control tools
  • You will maintain high standards of chemometric/statistical scrutiny and review the work of colleagues
  • You will work with stakeholders giving advice and technical support
  • You will proactively seek new opportunities in line with business plans/strategy
  • You will keep yourself up to date with developments in the chemometrics, statistics and data science fields by attending training courses, conferences and other learning routes
  • You will make use of networks to promote chemometrics, statistics and data science
  • You will communicate, present and facilitate discussions of technically complex concepts and topics and can train others in aspects of chemometrics, statistics and data science
  • Providing expertise and delivery in statistics and data science, including, for example, study of statistical data, design of experiments, chemometrics, inspection statistics, extreme value computing, optimisation, financial modelling and forecasting, advanced process control, process improvement, statistical software development and statistics training
  • Governing small consultancy projects or PoCs
  • Consulting with customers at a wide range of levels throughout Shell companies (Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Corporate and Research)
  • Collaborating with Data Science GM-ship staff in UK, NL, India and USA, serving customers globally

Skills & Requirements

  • You will have, or will be completing in 2019, a Ph. D in Chemometrics, Industrial Statistics, Applied Mathematics or similar discipline, with strong background in multivariate statistics and process optimization
  • Proficient in process data modeling, monitoring and optimization (batch and continuous processes)
  • Strong technical skills in multi-block and tensor modelling
  • Knowledge in spectroscopic data and hyperspectral imaging
  • Knowledge of design of experiments, general linear modeling, multivariate analysis, statistical computing, statistical modeling, and/or time series modeling
  • Awareness of issues in statistics and dependence on data quality
  • A practical common-sense approach to problem-solving and attention to detail
  • Commercial skills would be seen as an advantage
  • Excellent oral and written interpersonal skills
  • A real passion for and expertise in practicing chemometric and statistical consulting to solve real-world problems
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation and presentation skills. Is experienced in communicating with business at all levels. Able to work independently and as part of a project team
  • Proficient in chemometrics software, e.g. PLS toolbox, ProMV Aspen, SIMCA
  • Knowledge in statistical software packages such as JMP, Minitab, etc
