ENBIS-18 in Nancy

The 18th Annual Conference of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics will be hosted by Laboratory of Mathematics “Institut Elie Cartan” of Lorraine University and will take place at the “Ecoles des Mines”, from September 2nd to September 6h, 2018.

In Nancy, three universities were founded in the 20th century, among which a National Polytechnic Institute that combined several engineering schools. In Metz, the first university appeared in 1970. On January 1st, 2012, after several years of preparation, these four universities merged into one, forming Université de Lorraine.

Nancy is famous around the world for its group of architectural masterpieces inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance. The artistic movement Art Nouveau flourished in Nancy and across Europe from the late 19th century, its influence is particularly visible in Nancy architecture. Be charmed by this magical city, its historic city centre and majestic  18th century squares. Combine this also with its Old City, museums and incomparable Art Nouveau heritage and you can see that Nancy really is a unique and truly splendid city.

We cordially invite you not only to engage in highly rewarding scientific and professional exchange during the conference, but also to find some leisure time and explore the town of Nancy and its region.

Warmly welcome,
ENBIS-18 Organizing Committee

About the conference

ENBIS (the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics) is a platform where statistical practitioners and academic statisticians from Europe and beyond meet, exchange ideas and design new projects. Individual membership of ENBIS is free. Many ENBIS network activities are web-based, but some take place face-to-face. Spring meetings are always dedicated to a special topic (e.g. data mining, reliability, DOE, etc.), whereas the annual conference (which traditionally takes place every September) hosts presentations from a wide variety of sectors, ranging from manufacturing to service, from private to public sector. Conference contributions can consist of introductions and overviews (presenting an area of expertise to the uninitiated), reviews (presenting state of the art advances in scientic research), and best practice communications (sharing experiences of practitioners). In short: The annual conference features both theoretical and practical papers. In addition, people from industry and business are invited to present their problems and current solutions and pick the brains of other conference participants to find better solutions than their current ones.

The annual conference session topics include but are not limited to, the special areas of interest that exist within ENBIS (formalised in the so-called Special Interest Groups). The non-exhaustive list includes:

  • Design of Experiments
  • Measurement Uncertainty
  • Process Modeling and Control
  • Reliability and Safety
  • Statistics in the Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Statistical Computing
  • Statistical Methods for Industrial Hygiene
  • Operational Risk Management
  • Statistics in Practice
  • Stochastic Modelling
  • Quality Improvement and Six Sigma
  • Data Mining and Warehousing
  • Machine Learning
  • Predictive Analytics
  • Statistical Education for Business and Industry

In addition to contributed sessions, ENBIS-18 includes 5 invited sessions and 15 special sessions.

Additionally, the annual conference also features distinguished keynote speakers (George Box, Blanton Godfrey, Stu Hunter, Doug Montgomery and David Hand are just a few well-known names from a long list of recent speakers), invited and contributed sessions, workshops and panel discussions, as well as pre- and post-conference courses.

The list of confirmed keynote speakers for ENBIS-18 features Jean-Yves Tourneret (University of Toulouse, France), Piercesare Secchi (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) Ron S. Kenett (KPA Group & Samuel Neaman Institute, Israel; 2018 Box Medalist), Sotiris Bersimis (Greek National Organization of Healthcare Services Provision & University of Piraeus; recipient of the 2018 Best Manager Award), Alessandra Menafoglio (Politecnico di Milano, Italy; recipient of the 2018 Young Statistician Award), and Abel Folch-Fortuny (DSM Food Specialties, Spain; recipient of the 2018 Young Statistician Award).
